In 2023 we did two plantings of white clover to help enrich our sandy soil. The fall planting included flowering thyme, several native grasses, and an assortment of clumping fescue. The clover helped to protect and condition the soil throughout the winter, setting us up for terrific growth in the spring. The spring clover planting further enriched the soil and provided extra nitrogen for the new grasses rising demands.
It took a few years to establish, but once it got going, our hill transformed into a giant fluffy purple cloud of flowering thyme. Insects ranging from cartoonishly large to amusingly small seemed to appreciate its wee tiny little blossoms. Everything you look at, everywhere, is moving. Our once dry and barren hillside of sketchy turf grass has become a verdant oasis teeming with life and activity.
